Natural Herbal Remedies and Their Uses

Considering the increased interest in herbs and herbal remedies , it is obvious that there is a curiosity to understand the various natural herbs that can be beneficial for specific ailments. Some of the common herbs that can be used for specific mild conditions are mentioned below. The following list, by no means comprehensive, helps in starting the process of understanding how you can use some common herbs for your benefit.

- Goldenseal is mainly known for its antibiotic properties. Steep half to one teaspoon of root goldenseal for each cup and leave for ten minutes to gain best effects.

- Chamomile can be used for relieving stress, combating infection, quickening the healing processes and stomach problems.

- Garlic is a strong antibiotic and antiviral that is good for cardiovascular problems too. It can be eaten raw if you do not mind the taste and smell or as an additive to food. It must be cut or chewed before ingestion to release the effective ingredient known as allicin.

- Ginseng improves stamina, stimulates the immune system and protects the liver from toxins. Ginseng is available singly or as a main ingredient in many herbal supplements .

- Ginger prevents internal blood clotting and can also reduce the risk of a heart attack. Two to 3 milligrams of ginger before travel can prevent motion sickness. It can be used as a culinary additive or as tea available in tea bags.

- Licorice can be used for relief from ulcers. It also helps in soothing sore throats.

- Spearmint and peppermint are good for treating indigestion.

Besides these herbs that are most popular in the West, there are herbs that have proven their efficacy over time in China and India. Chinese herbs like Dong Quai, Fo Ti, green tea and Reishi Mushrooms effectively treat infections, restore menstrual cycles, control vaginal discharges, arrest asthma attacks, treat coughs and general fatigue. Chinese Ephedra, though good for asthma and colds, should be taken only after consulting a qualified herbalist as it can cause insomnia and high blood pressure. It is also contraindicated during pregnancy.

Indian herbs that find extensive reference in the ancient encyclopedias include Ashwagandha, (Withania somnifera) Brahmi, (Bacopa) Amla, (Emblica officinalis or Gooseberry) Guggul (Commiphora wightii), Shilajit, (purified asphaltum) Turmeric and Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum). Ashwagandha is often referred to as the Indian ginseng and guggul is now extensively used in modern medicine for heart ailments and joint pains.

Among relatively modern therapies, homeopathy probably makes the best use of natural remedies . It is a principle of treatment that asserts the principle of “similar treats similar” and like all alternative therapies and holistic treatments, treats a person rather than symptoms. For example, two persons with same symptoms may be treated with different remedies depending upon their personalities.

Homeopathy also makes good use of many herbs, including extremely toxic herbs and other natural products to produce highly diluted remedies to treat ailments ranging from minor cough and cold to sexual dysfunctions to serious diseases like cardiovascular problems, arthritis and diabetes.
