One Minute Power Tip:

"Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I may not forget you."
- William Arthur Motivational quote

To Lose Weight, Eat Slowly

It takes our brain about 20 minutes to realize that we are full.

When you eat too fast, there is not enough time for the “full” feeling to register, so you’d end up eating more.

Eating slowly helps you feel more full and consume less food.

To Lose Weight, Dump Your Fattening Daily Routines

Do you have any food-related daily routines that are making you fat?

You know, those food “rituals” that you do on auto-pilot, without even thinking about them?

For example, grabbing a cup of coffee as soon as you get to work?

Reaching for the donut inside the box on the office counter?

Eating popcorn while watching TV?

Do you do anything along those lines? Do you have your own, completely unique food-related habits that are not doing you any good?

Recognize them, and dump them! Even if you dump just one, you’ll still get skinnier than you were before!

Fast Facts On Potatoes

Throughout America, potatoes are the most popular vegetable, even being ahead of other well known vegetables such as lettuce and onions.

You can cook potatoes in a variety of ways, and they are included in one out of three meals eaten by almost all Americans. When they are prepared in a healthy way, a potato can be an excellent source of energy and also pack a nutritional punch.

Like oranges, potatoes are very high in vitamin C. The fact is, one medium potato contains 45% of the vitamin C that's recommended for good health. Potatoes are also high in fiber and carbohydrates and contain more potassium than a banana.

A potato is naturally low in calories and contains no fat, sodium, or cholesterol. The skins of the potatoes provide a helpful dose of fiber, iron, potassium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, and several B vitamins.

You can prepare potatoes by boiling them, steaming them, or even roasting them. If at all possible, you should avoid putting potatoes in the refrigerator or freezing them, as cold will turn the potato starch to sugar and cause them to turn dark when they are cooked.

When you store potatoes, keep them in a cool, dark place. Too much light will cause them to turn green. You can store them in the basement if you have one, as the basement is the best place to keep potatoes.

From mashed potatoes to baked potatoes, a potato is something we all know and love. They serve many different tasty foods, and they provide our bodies with plenty of healthful benefits. We all eat potatoes, some of us even grow our own.

Whether you grow your on or buy them, the potato is the one vegetable that makes everything just a little bit better.

Natural Beauty recipe

Cornmeal Facial Mask

Two tablespoons of cornmeal mixed with enough water to make a thick paste makes a great inexpensive facial mask.

Gently apply to face and wash off.

Lighten Circles under Eyes

To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15-20 minutes.

Wipe off residue and apply an eye cream.

Health Guide Online Book of the Month:
“Food Nutrition Facts & F.A.Q.”

“NUTRITION OVERVIEW”

Q- We would like to explore some of the specifics about unhealthy eating and nutrition. If you had to define nutrition what is it?

A- There is a set of guidelines that the government publishes for 20 or so different vitamins and minerals and nutrient and the carbohydrates and those values or based on population studies where they go out and look at the health and consider what people consume on a regular basis.

Q- Would it be safe to say that nutrition is based on certain food stuffs?

A- If you wanted to generalize it I would say that it would be just getting all the right balance of nutrients necessary for good health.

Q- What is the difference between nutrients and food stuffs?

A- Basically none. You can look at anything that provides nutrients to the body like carbohydrates, protein, minerals and vitamins. They are the vitamins and minerals that everyone knows about and then there are the ones like micronutrients like selenium, chromium and zinc and some of those that aren’t so talked about. But food in general is just a carrier for nutrients.

You can take a loaf of bread it…has starch in it and protein and non-fat dry milk, the non-fat dry milk will contain lactose. It will contain a high amount of minerals usually. The non-fat dry milk will contain casing, which is a non-fat dry milk protein. You break down the constituents in the food and each one of those provides nutrients for the body.

Q- How does one go about breaking years and years of bad eating habits? And we are going to talk more about eating and diet a little bit later but what would be the start point for someone?

A- If there were an easy answer to the question we wouldn’t have the problems we have today like obesity. You know right now in the US 60% of the population has a weight problem. “Morbidly Obese” is clinically defined as being 100 pounds or more overweight. In our population, the number of people being morbidly obese is increasing year after year.

People with just such a weight problem are continuing to increase every year. In our culture today there is an over abundance of food available. You know, on every corner there is fast food and billboards and everywhere you turn there is an advertisement for fast food.

You know starting almost from infancy where you have two working parents they get home from their job and they are more likely to park there kids in front of the TV.

More and more year after year the cable companies seem to be just filled with everything you can imagine and not very nutritious food. You get exposed to that and it gets ingrained in your thinking about food and, if you will do the research on it, many of those ads are geared toward influencing children.

When they go back and do the research on the influence what mom and pop pick off the grocery shelf, they find that the children have a tremendous influence. So they target those ads at the children knowing that they are going to put the pressure on the parents to buy them.

You can show a person in black and white what foods are good for them and what isn’t and it pretty much comes down to a conscious decision if they want to consume healthy foods or not.

And it certainly would be a value to have a mentor or life coach or fitness trainer or just a friend where there is some kind of relationship when it comes to dealing with eating healthy.

The fact is that you need support and one of the reasons there are so many weight loss programs is that they do something a little different they have meetings and people get together and support each other.

You know Optifast and there is Atkins and when you gauge how much weight people have lost and whether they keep it off, all of those people probably within a 5 year period have gained all that weight back because they have lost their support group. It speaks volumes that if people are going to lose weight and keep it off they need a support group.

It has to be approached that you are not on a diet to lose weight you are trying to make a lifestyle change. It is going to be a new way of eating and new habits even your daily activities it is something that you are going to do for the rest of your life.

Q- What is very sad is generational obesity. You can be out shopping or eating in a restaurant and where you see overweight parents you are going to see overweight children. Why do you think this happens?

A- In a way it is endorsement to the children that their eating habits and lifestyle habits are acceptable. Just like any of us what better role models than your parents. If they snack and eat unhealthy then the children will as well.

You know what is interesting is that everyone is trying to answer the question, “why are people getting fatter and fatter,” and even Jay Leno makes jokes about people getting fat. You know the notion out there is that it isn’t something that people can change it’s just that people are genetically predisposed to getting fat. And there is a genetic factor to it but you know that Dr. Phil responds to it like you may be predisposed to it but you don’t have to succumb to it.

Q- Do you think that much of those habits are linked to emotions?

A- Emotions and stress all those things get factored into it. Genetics will change in a thousand years but not in the last ten years. You can factor the genetic side of it almost entirely out of it. Everybody has times of emotional needs.

Just knowing what to eat and how much to eat and what is healthy and maintaining enough sleep all factor into just having a healthy lifestyle.

Natural Cures Health Tip:

“Relaxing herbal bath salts recipe collection”

Bath Salt Recipe

Ingredients:

- 3 parts Epsom salts
- 2 parts baking soda
- 1 part table salt (Dead Sea Salts or borax)
- Essential Oils

Mix thoroughly using your hands to stir the ingredients. This is now the base from which you can create a wide variety of bath salts.

Now add the essential oils drop by drop, one ingredient at a time, until the scent seems right. Using your hands and fingertips, mix it until all salt particles are moistened.

To use, add from 2 tablespoons to one-half cup of the bath salts to a full tub. Mix with your hands into the water. Relax and enjoy.

Dead Sea Salts

Rich in mineral salts found along the shore of the Dead Sea they are unique in character and famous for their healing and therapeutic properties. The therapeutic powers of Dead Sea Natural Mineral Salt Crystals help to relieve aches and pains, prevent stiffness after exercising, relaxing the muscles.

Epsom Salts

Epsom Salt is a natural magnesium sulfate. The therapeutic values of Epsom Salts are well known including aiding the well-being of the skin, detoxification and the soothing of swollen body parts. Combined with our pure essential oils this bath salt is truly wonderful.

Relaxing herbal bath salts recipe:

A concoction of salts and aromatic flowers, herbs or oils can be added to the bath for a wonderful soak at bedtime.

Although many salts are suitable, simple sea salt is used for this mixture

Chamomile is widely recognized sedative; for the following bath is has been combined with sweet marjoram, which is an effective treatment for insomnia.

These bath salts should be used only if you are planning to go straight to sleep after your bath: sweet marjoram is thought to be an anaphordisiac, which means that is has the opposite effect of an aphrodisiac!’

As well as having a sedative effect, the bath salts will heal and stimulate the skin.

Chamomile bath salts recipe:

500 grams / 1 and a quarter lb / 2 and a half cups of: coarse sea salt
10 drops chamomile essential oil
10 drops sweet marjoram essential oil
1-3 drops green or blue food coloring (optional)

Combine all the ingredients, mixing well with a wooden spoon, and pour into a glass jar with a lid.
Place the lid on firmly and store in a cool place.
Add two heaped tablespoons of salts to the bath, pouring them under the hot tap as the water runs.

Mandarin Orange Bath Salts, Lavender Bath Salts, Sugar and Spice Bath Salts, Bath Salts from the Sea, and Patchouli Bath Salts.

What You Will Need:

For the Bath Salts Recipes –

• epsom salts or sea salt, or both, and baking soda
• essential oils - mandarin orange, lavender, sandalwood, and patchouli or
• 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ginger and 1/4 tsp cloves for each cup of sugar and spice bath salts
• food coloring
• 1 or 2 teaspoons of glycerin per jar - optional, but glycerin is an effective skin moisturizer and a nice addition

For the Decorative Glass Jars –

• four glass jars and one glass sugar shaker jar
• printable jar labels
• scissors and glue to cut out and stick on labels
• assorted embellishments, including several yards of orange or peach colored ribbon, small amount of lavender or mauve ribbon, ecru or white doily, raffia, tacky glue and household twine

Instructions:

1. Collect your jars, remove labels, then wash and dry thoroughly.

2. For most bath salts recipes you can use your choice of epsom salts or sea salt, with baking soda, if desired, or a combination of all three.

One good mix is one cup of epsom salts, with 1/4 cup of sea salt, and two or three tablespoons of baking soda. A little more or less of each ingredient is fine for most bath salts.

Epsom salts and sea salt are soothing for tired muscles, while both will gently soften the water for a luxurious bath experience. You could also add a tablespoon or two of finely ground regular oatmeal (not quick cooking) for silky, skin-softening water.

3. Fill each jar to the top with the combination of bath salts that you plan to use. Empty the salts into a mixing jar and add a drop or two of glycerin, if using.

Add your choice of essential oil - how many drops you use is a personal preference, but start with two or three drops and see if you like the fragrance.

The same goes for the liquid food coloring; sometimes I use quite a few drops of food color to get the strong hue that I like, but so far it hasn't stained the bath tub or anyone's skin.

Remember that the color and fragrance will be much diluted in the bath water. Stir the salts vigorously until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

• Mandarin Orange Bath Salts recipe:

Use a small canning jar for this project, with a screw top one piece lid. I also used only epsom salts, adding about six drops of mandarin essential oil and about six drops of orange food color. The lid is decorated with 1/2" orange ribbon, cut in strips to cover the top.

Coat the lid with tacky glue and lay the first strip going across the middle of the lid and extending over the rim just a little on both sides. Add ribbon strips on either side, each one overlapping just a little, until the top of the lid is covered.

Take another strip and glue it around the lid rim, covering the edges of the top ribbons. Overlap the ends of the lid rim strip and glue down firmly. Cover these ends by making a small bow, then gluing it in place.

Screw the ribbon lid in place securely.
