Apples: To a Healthier You

For centuries, we always heard a popular proverb
“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. However, is there any real truth to this saying? Or it is just a myth invented by some merchant who wants to profit from the sale of his apples?
Apples are one of the most widely cultivated fruit trees in the world. The apple tree was one of the very earliest fruit trees to be farmed or cultivated, so it is not surprising that there is a wide spectrum of apple varieties available nowadays.
In fact, there are at least 55 million tons of apples that were grown worldwide last 2005. The abundance of this fruit leads to many scientific researches, examining its properties and proving an old-age proverb to be true.
Therefore, let us examine the different health benefits we can get from apples. The boron content of apples helps in promoting bone growth thus strengthening our bones.
The high fiber content, on the other hand, helps in regulating the bowel movement which helps in preventing the risk of colon cancer.
In addition, fiber also helps in slowing down the release of sugars in our body which leads to a steady level of blood sugar. Moreover, due to the soluble fiber found in apples, studies show that apples help in lowering the blood
cholesterol.
Flavonoids are also plentiful in apples and it has been found that they help in preventing the growth of prostate cancer cells. In addition to that, they have inhibitory effects on the growth of carcinogenic substances in the bladder.
These reduce the risk of bladder cancer, particularly to those in smoking. Furthermore, in a study that links flavoniods and heart diseases, it has been concluded by the British medical journal that "the results suggest that people with very low intakes of flavoniods have higher risks of coronary disease."
Phytochemicals are also present in apples, and these act as antioxidants.
Antioxidants can help in reducing the harm caused by free radicals that are found in our bodies. Also, antioxidants play an important role in helping to keep us younger and healthier.
From the studies of different research institutions on the planet, it has been confirmed that consumption of foods rich in antioxidants help in the reduction of age-related, physical and mental degeneration.
The above mentioned examples on the wonder of apples are just a few from the long lists of advantages we receive from eating this fruit.
Many researches also indicate that apples help in preventing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, wrinkles, and stroke. It promotes hair growth and weight loss as well. It seems that the old proverb is right since it has a great supporter – science.
Thus considering the many substances that are found in apples which are good for our body, it only proves that by eating apples, we are reducing risks of being unhealthy. In addition, it is a cheap way of becoming healthy.
