Can A Good Friend Help Overcome Depression Blues?

Feeling ‘blue’ is normal from time to time and we all know what it feels like to have a ‘blue’ day. But imagine having a ‘blue’ day every single day! Well that’s what it is like for someone that suffers from depression.

When you suffer from depression and continually feel down, how do you pull yourself out of that dark place? Overcoming is not easy as when you are feeling sad and life seems to be so negative, it is really difficult to motivate yourself to get up and make a change.

Although trying to live a healthy lifestyle and introducing some exercise into your daily routine can have a positive effect for depression sufferers, usually they are stuck in a situation where they just don’t have the energy or desire to start doing any exercise.

On occasions one may build up the energy and drive and get out there and start exercising and they might even feel good for a couple of days, but more often than not, after a couple of days it just feels like it is too much hard work and they soon fall back into feeling blue.

It can be helpful if you can get a friend or family member to start an exercise routine with you. Even just a walk each day can help you to get out and about in the fresh air which is a great benefit for a healthy body and mind.

Although when walking on your own each day it is easy to lose motivation, it is much easier to keep that motivation if you are walking with a partner and have them encouraging you to keep going each day.

When you are walking with a friend you also have the advantage of being able to talk to someone. You might want to talk about why you are feeling depressed and getting it off your chest can often help you to feel better.

Or you may prefer not to talk about your depression and just keep the conversation to a more general topic, which is also good as it can help keep your mind active and not thinking about feeling sad.

Having a friend to talk to is a great form of therapy and you really do feel better after you’ve had a talk. Trying to hide your depression though may result in tension which might make you feel more anxious and won’t help you at all in your quest to overcome depression.

So if you have a good friend that is understanding, then don’t hide your depression from them, share your thoughts, your moods and if they really are a good friend they will be there to listen to you and to help you through this difficult time.

Although you might just want to curl up in bed and stay there all day, try to make the effort to get out for a walk and preferably with a friend if you can. It isn’t the whole answer to depression, but it can certainly help.
