Gentle Exercises That Delay Aging Diseases!

by Donald Caddell
(Chicago, Illinois, USA)

When you get older, it's important that regular physical activity remains part of your lifestyle. If you have never been active before, this is a good time to start.

Studies have shown that exercise is almost like a fountain of youth. Many of the ailments and so called aging diseases we have thought to be related to aging are actually the result of inactivity.

However, you may find that as you're getting older, you're not able to do the same activities you did as a younger person. If you're beginning to exercise for the first time in your life, you will have to proceed cautiously.

Here are some gentle exercises that you can do later in life. Remember to consult with a doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Swimming is a wonderful low–impact activity that you can do at any age. You may not be able to climb mountains anymore, but swimming gives you an intense, fun workout, while the water provides cushioning for your joints.

Swimming tones your muscles and strengthens your heart. When you exercise in water, the water creates more resistance so your muscles have to work harder than they do when you exercise on land.

If you suffer from joint pain, swimming could be a good choice for you. Even professional athletes exercise in water to rehabilitate after an injury.

The runners and joggers who run past your house in the morning may be the picture of health, and it might be tempting for you to join them. But that may not be the right exercise for you. Running can be very hard on your knees and cause injuries.

According to some experts, walking at the same speed will give you all the health benefits of going for a run without the risk of injury. To ease into a walking program, start at a speed you can do right now and slowly increase your speed as you are able.

Strength training is also very important for you at this age. Forget the heavy weights that bodybuilders use to build up massive muscles. You're looking to increase your health and your strength, and that can be done with gentle weight lifting.

For weight lifting, you don't want to exercise every day. Your muscles need a chance to rest in between workouts. Start with light weights and simple exercises.

In the beginning, you may want to leave the weights on the floor and simply lift your own body weight. Ask a trainer for assistance in developing a strength-training program, if possible.

Getting older is no excuse for not exercising. In fact, it's more important now than ever. These gentle exercises will give you a fun and healthy workout.
