How To Treat A Yeast Infection:
Methods Your Doctor May Recommend

by Victoria
(Chicago, Illinois, USA)

Knowing how to treat a yeast infection can often be difficult, especially as many women seem to be susceptible to the condition. The first thing you should do is visit your doctor for an official diagnosis, after which they may prescribe you medication to help get the infection under control.

For Simple Cases of Yeast Infection

Doctors will often tell you how to treat a yeast infection yourself if the symptoms are very mild. In these cases, you might also be given a single dose of oral anti-fungal medication.

Vaginal therapy is another form of treatment, consisting of antifungal cream, tablets or suppositories that work on reducing the amount of yeast in the body.

These work in the majority of yeast infection cases. You can often use over the counter medication to do the same job.

If your symptoms are still there after the treatment has finished, you should visit your doctor again.

How to Treat A Yeast Infection That’s More Severe

If your yeast infection is more severe, that is the symptoms are very strong, you have had four or more infections in a year, it’s caused by a type of candida other than candida albicans, you’re pregnant or you have a weak immune system, then you may require different forms of treatment.

In many cases, the vaginal therapy will be administered over a longer period of time than in milder cases. This is usually around one to two weeks.

You may also have a few doses of oral medication to help control the fungus, though this generally isn’t recommended for pregnant women.

If you regularly suffer from yeast infections then you may be given regular medication to help keep levels of yeast in your body under control. Your partner won’t usually need to be treated for yeast infection, unless you are suffering from recurring infections.

Other Treatment Options

Knowing how to treat a yeast infection can be frustrating at times, especially when nothing seems to be working. In these cases, many women look for their own cures.

One of these involves adapting the diet to include as little yeast and sugar as possible, commonly known as the “candida albicans diet”. Some people see a huge improvement after a month of sticking to the diet, though it may not work as well for others.

Whatever you do, it’s important to start by asking your doctor how to treat a yeast infection. They will need to give you an official diagnosis to rule out any other conditions.

Take a look at your lifestyle, avoiding scented feminine hygiene products and douching, and keep testing different treatment options until you see a pattern in what helps to relieve the symptoms and what doesn’t.
