Natural Beauty & Self Image....many people avoid artificial colours in their foods, but don't check out the colours in cosmetics and personal care products.

It is only in recent years that cosmetics have started to carrya full list of ingredients on their packaging.

Making sense of the ingredients can be difficult for the layperson. This is particularly true for colourings, which oftengo under the guise of numbers rather than names.

In many countries colours in cosmetics are listed as colourindex numbers. C.I. numbers are allocated by the Society ofDyers and Colourists.

The scheme covers colours used in food, personal care products, cosmetics, household products and fabric dyeing. So, for example you will not normally see 'tartrazine' listed in your lipstick ingredients, but it may be there listed as C.I. 19140. Erythrosine will be listed as C.I. 45430, and so on.

The USA uses a different system: the FD & C colors have beencategorised by the American Food & Drink Administration for usein foods, drugs and cosmetics. So in this system tartrazine isFD & C yellow 5, and amaranth is FD & C red 2.

The 'E Number' system is used by the European Community (EC).This is a system of giving code numbers to food additives, someof which are also used in cosmetics and personal care products.This system is also used in some other countries but withoutthe E prefix, so E102 becomes simply colour '102'.

Natural Beauty All this confusion for the average consumer would not beimportant, but for the fact that some of these colours areknown to cause problems in susceptible individuals.

For example, tartrazine (also known as FD & C Yellow 5, CI 1914 and EI02) can cause migraines, itching, rhinitis and agitation insusceptible individuals. Many individuals avoid its use in food, but do not realise how extensively it is used in cosmetics, such as lipstick, and personal care products.

The big worries in terms of colours in cosmetics and personalcare products are lipstick, coloured lip balms, lip gloss andlip pencils, because anyone who uses these regularly 'eats' afair quantity over their life time, but these colours alsoappear in skin cream, foundation, mascara and so on too.(Remember also that these colours can also be in 'natural'cosmetics and skin care products.)

Another worry is that even the 'experts' cannot agree on aninternational 'safe' list of colours, so that a colour may beallowed in one country, but banned elsewhere.

For example, quinoline yellow is allowed within the European Community and in some other countries, but is banned in Japan, Norway and the United States.

As ever, the advice is: keep yourself informed and read thelabel. Here is a list of the different names and numbers thatcommon colourings go under:

“Cranberry Lip Gloss”

1 tablespoon sweet almond oil
10 fresh cranberries
1 teaspoon honey
1 drop of vitamin E oil

Mix all the ingredients together in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for a couple of minutes or until the mixture just begins to boil. (Bowl may also be heated in a pan of water on a stovetop).

Stir well and gently crush the berries. Cool mixture for five minutes and then strain through a fine sieve to remove all the fruit pieces. Stir again and set aside to cool completely. When cool, transfer into a small portable plastic container or tin.

Light Rose Moisturizer (normal skin)

Ingredients

• 1 tsp beeswax
• 1 tsp lanolin
• 1 tbsp almond oil
• 1/2 tsp wheat grem oil
• 1/4 tsp borax
• 3 tbsp warmed rosewater
• 6 drops essential oil of rose

Instructions

• Melt together beeswax and lanolin, stirring constantly
• Warm the oils gently
• Gradually beat oils into the waxes
• Dissolve the borax in the rosewater
• Slowly add the rosewater to the oil and wax mixture, beat constantly until cool
• Stir in the rose oil as the mixture begins to thicken
• Spoon into jars with air thight lids and label

Like the colors of rainbow, there are shades of virtually every color when it comes to coloring your lips. Whether a party or office, makeup can never be complete can never be complete withoue a layer of lipstick.

• To stop lips from chapping due to dry lip sticks, use a very slight base of vaseline before applying the lipstick.

• Grind rose petals and apply on lips to get smooth pink lips • If you sunbathe, be sure to use a lip balm with sufficient sunscreen. Remember to moisturise lips after soaking up the rays. (Special tip: lip balms with camphor are designed to help lips that need healing. For effective moisturising, choose a balm without camphor, or use a clear lip gloss.)

Home Made Recipe for lip Care

For a relaxing, at-home boost to your lips, mash a quarter of a ripe papaya until it makes a juicy paste. Then, lie down on a towel and apply a generous amount to the lips and the skin around the lips. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, rinse it off and apply lip balm. Papaya contains exfoliating enzymes and can help to soften and refine lip lines.

Winter Lip Care

Lips tend to dry out the fastest at this time of year. Be sure to keep them covered with a good lip balm applied several times during the day. Warm sesame oil will also soothe your lips . Avoid licking your lips and don't bite the skin on the surface of your lips.

The skin will never have a chance to heal if you chew on it. This is a hard habit to break but well worth the effort. Lip balms are now commonly available with an SPF factor as well to protect them from the harmful rays.

Dry Chapped Lips Cause, Symptoms, Cure, Treatment

The skin on our lips is actually mucous membrane, so for them to remain smooth and chap free is a bit of a challenge. The most common cause of cracked lips are allergic reaction to cosmetics, skin infections, extreme weather conditions like excess sun and wind exposure, biting of the lips or a vitamin B deficiency.

If dryness, cracking or soreness of the lip has already developed, it is especially important to use a medicated product to provide relief. A product with a penetrating analgesic can soothe the lips quickly and effectively.

If your lips are prone to dryness and flaking, or if you would like to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your lips, a lip care product that exfoliates damaged skin cells while rehydrating your lips could be the best choice. Stop your lips getting so chapped and flaky.

Drinking plenty of water to prevent dehydration, and applying a coating of lip balm before bed to help to moisturize lips while you sleep.

When participating in outdoor activity, use a lip balm that contains a SPF of at least 15 to prevent sunburn. Add base coat of lip balm prior to applying lipstick during the dry winter months.

If lips become chapped, avoid wearing lipsticks while lips are recovering as drying products in color pigments may irritate chapped lips. Switch to a moisturizing lipstick to prevent your lips from drying out during the daytime.

Home Made Recipe for chapped lips

Mix 2 drops of glycerine with 1 tsp of cream on the top of milk and apply to lips to cure the chapped lips and keep overnight to get smooth and shiny lips.

Grind rose petals with cream on the top of milk and apply on lips to cure the cracked lips.

To cure dry chapped lips apply peanut butter or coco butter to your lips before going to bed.
