- When Your Skin Is Sensitive
by Roger Smith
(UK)
Ever had your skin breakout in a rash after trying on a new product? This happens when your skin is sensitive.
As much as you want to take care of yourself and look younger, you just can’t get the first product you’ll see on store shelves. Your skin is less tolerant than normal skin types thus it can get irritated easily. How do you know if you suffer from sensitive skin? Look for the following signs:
- When you get rashes or breakouts after trying on a new product
- You see signs of skin dryness that leads to flaky skin
- You get a tight feeling after using a new facial wash
- You see red spots or your skin gets blotchy when you are exposed to extreme weather
So how do you care for your skin more so that it looks better even as you get older? First of all, you need to know your skin type because this will determine the type of products you should be using.
There are oil-control products and anti-aging creams made for sensitive skin. Ask your doctor for advice because sometimes, you won’t need to spend so much just to give your skin what it truly needs. There may actually be home remedies that you may not be entirely aware of.
Once you have that product in your hand, read the label to know how it works and what you need to do before applying it on your face. Sensitive skin is easily irritated so you need products with soothing or anti-inflammatory ingredients.
Things like licorice reduce redness and alleviate the tight feeling that you get when your skin gets irritated. And, always say no to fragrances and colorants. Go for products which don’t have perfumes or too many preservatives, you will find that these are mildest and safest especially when your skin is the type to break out immediately.
Once you find that one thing that works for you, stick to it. Don’t switch just because you became curious over an advertisement you saw.
Moreover, when you exfoliate and scrub your face clean, know that there are limits to this type of routine. Using strong peels and strong exfoliators more than what is required can irritate your skin and accelerate the signs of aging.
It sounds a little too severe but repeated inflammation from harsh products can cause a chain reaction that breaks down the skin’s dermis. You age more quickly because this is where the elastin and collagen fibers are located.
Once that you see your skin is red and inflamed, stop scrubbing and opt for a mild cleanser instead. Add a moisturizer with SPF after because your skin is more susceptible to sun damage.
It is sometimes tempting to do your facials daily, and as much as you feel clean afterwards, you need to know when to stop. Or else, you won’t look your best.
Instead, you’ll have to deal with more skin problems. Try to avoid things that are harmful. Don’t give in to your desires. In the end, you won’t regret the small sacrifices that you made.
