Swim to a Healthier You!

by Sabina Mendez
(Philadelphia, USA)

During those warm days, going to the gym becomes even more of a chore. It’s so hot outside and the idea of sweating it out some more is excruciating.

Right now, the best way to get some exercise is to swim. It’s the ideal way to tone those muscles without feeling all the stress. Swimming builds endurance, increases muscle strength, and enhances your cardiovascular fitness as well.

Running, jogging, and walking are just as effective, but the continuous pressure you put on your knees and ankles can also be damaging, especially when you don’t wear the right kind of shoes. You are weightless in the water, and because of that, you take some impact off of your body.

You don’t need to be an athlete to exercise in the water. Of course it helps when you know how to do the right kind of strokes. Nonetheless, a simple dog paddle can already get your heart rate going.

Aside from that, swimming is the perfect way of warming up while cooling down at the same time. As you increase the intensity of your strokes, you stimulate the muscle activity within your body.

This also can prepare you for a land-based workout routine. Just swim a few laps. For a great cool down activity, do the laps in a leisurely pace.

This allows you to let blood travel down your muscles so they can recover from the pressure you placed on them. Glide steadily up and down the length of the pool and make sure to breathe in through your mouth and out your nose.

Aside from yoga and Pilates, swimming is not just good for your body, it’s also great for the mind. Of course, if you want to lose weight faster, you can start by stretching and walking at a brisk pace before you dip in the pool.

You will still have to work your body because you will have to exert a lot of effort.

To strengthen your heart and lungs, this is the best activity you can do. Soon, you’ll notice that you won’t experience as much muscle strain.

Let your mind focus on each stroke, and soon you’ll see that you relax in the process. When you get used to the rhythm, you can even allow your mind to wander and think about pleasant things as you swim from end to end.

Everyone can benefit from swimming. Water acts as the resistant force that allows your muscles to become stronger with time. Plus, this is one thing you can get into during those extra warm days.

Pretty soon, you may even find yourself addicted to the routine. Don’t just limit your options to what you can do on land. Interests will vary from person to person, and you could be the water enthusiast.

Try it and see if this is something you can do to help build your bones and muscles. Just get yourself a nice suit, bring goggles, and swim to your heart’s content. It’s certainly a worthwhile activity!
