The trend for alternative or natural medicine is repeated throughout Western society. Its growth is just astounding!.
To cite some of the more salient growth spurts, in the United States between 1991 and 1997 the use of herbal medicines grew by 380 percent. In Australia right now, 57 percent of the population use some form of alternative medicine, as well as France with 49 percent and Germany at 46 percent. These numbers represent an impressive standard by itself.
For many it’s easy to see why. Simply because it is safer since it’s organic, and it works! Individuals aren’t the only ones trending to more natural medicine. Even many of the medicines available at your local pharmacy have turned more organic and natural.
Alternative medicine encompasses a large array of different systems and therapies like Ayurvedic medicine, the commonly known homeopathy to vitamin therapy. In the western culture, the term ‘alternative medicine’ constitutes any healing practice that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine.
To this day, the practices of Alternative Medicine are as diverse in their foundations as in their methodologies.
Let’s begin with Homeopathy – this was developed in the 1800s by a German physician Samuel Hahnemann. The system is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances given in mainly tablet form, which triggers the body’s natural system of healing.
In many homeopathic literature, the principle is best described as ‘like cures like’. Meaning, that a substance that would cause symptoms to a healthy person is used to cure those same symptoms in illness.
Right now, scientifically it can not yet be explained precisely how homeopathy works, but there are new theories in quantum physics that are going some way towards shedding more information on the process.
But what we do know is that a carefully selected homeopathic remedy acts as a trigger to the body’s healing process.
Homeopathic medicines or homeopathic remedies are a low-cost, non-toxic system used by millions of people around the world for more than 200 years. It can be used alongside conventional medicines and does not interfere with the action of medicines prescribed by your doctor. Homeopathic remedies are even considered safe for pregnant women and babies.
Another system present is Ayurveda. This has been practiced in India for the past five thousand years and recently got introduced to the West due to the work and lectures of Dr. Deepak Chopra, MD.
Ayurvedic medicine is a very comprehensive system that puts emphasis on re-establishing balance in the body through diet, lifestyle, exercise, and body cleansing, and more importantly on the health of the mind, body and spirit in a very personal approach. This allows a person’s state to be in harmony with their environment.
Ayurveda is a whole medical system, like the Chinese medicine, it is based on theories of health and illness and on the methods of preventing and treating health conditions.
Traditional Chinese medicine is also another venue for alternative medicine seekers. It has been practiced for over 3,000 years . This ancient medical system takes a deep understanding of the laws and patterns of nature and applies them to the human body.
The heart of traditional Chinese medicine is the tenet that the root cause of illness, not their symptoms, must be treated. It views every aspect of a person’s body, mind, spirit, emotion as a part of one complete circle rather than loosely connected pieces to be treated individually.
TCM has been proven to treat many chronic diseases such as cancer, heart diseases and allergies as it focuses on the individual and correct the underlying causes of imbalance and patterns of disharmony.
Nowadays, when people think of TCM they would derive their understanding from acupuncture. However, acupuncture is only one major treatment modalities of this system based on the Qi or what is known as vital energy.
To name the modalities used in this comprehensive medical system, TCM includes:
* Qigong: an energy practice, generally encompassing simple movements and postures. Some Qigong systems also emphasize breathing techniques.
* Herbal Therapy: the use of herbal combinations or formulas to strengthen and support organ system function Acupuncture: the insertion of needles in acupoints to help Qi flow smoothly.
* Acupressure: the use of specific hand techniques to help Qi flow smoothly.
* Foods for Healing: the prescription of certain foods for healing based on their energy essences or energy signatures, not nutritional value.
* Chinese Psychology: the understanding of emotions and their relationship to the internal organ systems and their influence on health.
One more system of medicine that is well established and popular in the United States since 1902, is Naturopathy. The school emphasized on the use of natural cures, proper bowel habits, and good hygiene as the tools for health.
This was the first time that principles of a healthy diet, like increasing fiber intake and reducing saturated fats, became popular and are still commonly practiced today.
Today, people who practice Naturopathy are licensed care providers in many states and offer a variety of natural therapies. Naturopaths treat both acute and chronic conditions.
N.D’s treat the whole person rather than only treating a disease or a symptom which aims to help their patients maintain a balanced state of good health. This approach is considered holistic and is believed to be suited for treating chronic illnesses.
And lastly, a system of medicine that is quite controversial and has garnered a lot of criticism here is the Orthomolecular medicine. This system uses a large dose of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids to return a body with an ailment onto wellness.
Nutrients is generally helpful in preventing and treating illnesses, but conclusions of medical research are unsubstantiated by the available evidence. Many still believes that some of Orthomolecular medicine are just plain quakery or food faddism.
